Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.

the grandmother of Rolfing & Structural Integration

Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D., was born in NY in 1896. She earned her Ph.D. in biological chemistry from Columbia University in 1920. She traveled extensively throughout Europe researching and publishing numerous articles on science and the body in academic journals.

Her belief in a body that heals itself; when aligned in gravity, appropriately, led her to build,  the Rolf method of Structural Integration (SI).

A modality founded on the manual manipulation of "fascia", a connective tissue, while arranging the layers to evoke length and ease. Her premise is simple; that gravity is the therapist and is never neutral.
